“Damien! Did I miss Melissa calling to schedule a meeting with Mr. Cross?”

“You didn’t.” The next morning, I showed up to Dad’s office unannounced on purpose. I didn’t tell him anything other than Anais being safe on purpose. This conversation needed to happen in person, and I was willing to wait.

Ellen, my father’s long-time assistant, stood up and stared at me, her eyes wide and mouth open. No one stormed into Martin Cross’s office and definitely not one of his sons. I wanted to take him by surprise, in hopes that he would do what I wanted him to do: tell the truth. No more hiding behind burying the past and talks of never speaking of this again. He might not have known everything, he knew more than he was letting on, including why Vincent blamed him for his father’s death. I wanted answers and I wanted them now.

“Let me see if Mr. Cross is available.”

“No need,” I said, before brushing past her and knocking on my father’s closed office door.” Before he could say come in, I waltzed into his office and shut the door behind me.

“To what do I owe this pleasure, Damien? I wasn’t expecting you today.” Dad placed his pen down and gave me a small smile.

“Can we talk for a minute?”

“Of course, son. I have some time before my next meeting. What do you want to talk about?”

“I want to talk about that night. The night of the fire. I know there’s more to the story that you aren’t telling me, and I demand to know everything.”

Dad’s face turned cold. “Why? That’s in the past and we buried that.”

“No. You buried it and I didn’t say anything about it even though I continued to suffer with the aftermath of this for years.”

Dad leaned back in his chair with his arms crossed. “Do you want to take a seat before this conversation continues?”

“No. Speaking of things being buried, it seems that things don’t stay that way because Charlotte is alive.”

Dad sat up with a start, placing his hands on his desk. “Charlotte is what?”

“She's alive. I saw her with my own two eyes.” I moved away from the door and walked closer to my father’s desk. “There’s a lot that you need to be filled in on that I’ve been keeping quiet while we get things sorted, and it revolves around you and the DePalmas.”

“We’ve both been keeping things from each other, it seems.” He said it matter-of-factly.

I agreed, except the secrets that I had been keeping were only a few days old versus his, which were well over a decade. I waited for him to say something else, but he didn’t. He almost looked to be in a daze, a reaction I’d never seen on his face.

He snapped out of it and directed his gaze to me. “Charlotte is alive?”

I nodded. “If I hadn’t seen her, I wouldn’t have believed it either.”

“How did you find out?” Dad stood up from his chair and walked toward me.
